Establishment of Biocentric Viral Load Laboratory in Kachin State

The HIV/TB Agency, Information, and Services (AIS) Activity, is working with partners to improve viral load coverage and suppression in Kachin, benefiting over 12,000 people living with HIV (PLHIV) on antiretroviral therapy (ART). The AIS provides support for viral load testing referrals, transportation allowances, assisted referrals, outsourcing of testing, and strengthening systems for viral load sample collection, transportation, and storage. In the last 18 months, viral load coverage among AIS-treated individuals has been only 34%, largely due to conflicts, supply interruptions, healthcare personnel limitations, and political unrest.

In collaboration with the AIS and the Mérieux Foundation, the Asian Harm Reduction Network (AHRN) established a Biocentric Viral Load Laboratory in Myitkyina, Kachin State, in April 2024.

The AIS provided support for the entire setup of the viral load laboratory, and a Medical Technologist to operate the viral load laboratory, while the Mérieux Foundation supported the viral load machine and the training of laboratory technicians. The necessary laboratory reagents, consumables, and supplies are provided by the Global Fund. The laboratory is expected to conduct approximately 1000-1300 viral load tests per month, referring to tests from AIS partners and ART centers across Kachin State. The establishment of this laboratory aims to achieve 95% viral load coverage and suppression in AIS projects in Kachin State.

The establishment of the Biocentric Viral Load Laboratory in Myitkyina, supported by AIS and partners, represents a critical advancement in the fight against HIV in Kachin State. By significantly increasing the capacity for viral load testing per month, this initiative addresses the previously low coverage rates caused by regional conflicts and resource limitations. This improved infrastructure is vital for achieving the goal of 95% viral load coverage and suppression among people living with HIV, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes, reducing transmission rates, and contributing to the overall health and stability of the community in Kachin State.
